Between strolling along the canals & using our day trip as an excuse to stuff our faces with chocolate, frites, & cupcakes, we did do the super touristy thing for a hot minute when we decided to visit the Gravensteen Castle, which translates to Castle of the Count in English.
Although history has unfolded to show that at least three fortified castles, constructed of wood, have stood on this site in the past, the castle as it stands today was erected around 1177, 1178. That there are some olden stones.
The tickets were eight euros each, or six if you are under 26. Well worth the price, as we wandered through the floors, exploring the dungeon & torture chambers all the way up to the view of the city on the roof.
When we first walked in, it appeared that some type of ceremony had just taken place, as this family was having their photographs taken {by more than just their hired photographer}.
But seriously, who could resist snapping a photo of these adorable kids? The answer: not me.
To finish the tour, we walked along the elevated perimeter of the castle, circling the city.
All in all, Ghent is a great day trip & interesting place to visit. Quaint, charming…very similar to Bruges. If you have to choose, go with Bruges…but if you already know/find out that Bruges is your jam, then definitely add this to your list of Belgium sites to see. Would I go back to Ghent? Absolutely. I would return with travel companions interested in seeing this city for sure. Who doesn’t love canals intersecting through the city center? And don’t forget about all the delicious beers, it is Belgium after all.
