Post image for castle of the count

Between strolling along the canals & using our day trip as an excuse to stuff our faces with chocolate, frites, & cupcakes, we did do the super touristy thing for a hot minute when we decided to visit the Gravensteen Castle, which translates to Castle of the Count in English.

Although history has unfolded to show that at least three fortified castles, constructed of wood, have stood on this site in the past, the castle as it stands today was erected around 1177, 1178.  That there are some olden stones.

The tickets were eight euros each, or six if you are under 26.  Well worth the price, as we wandered through the floors, exploring the dungeon & torture chambers all the way up to the view of the city on the roof.

When we first walked in, it appeared that some type of ceremony had just taken place, as this family was having their photographs taken {by more than just their hired photographer}.

But seriously, who could resist snapping a photo of these adorable kids?  The answer: not me.

To finish the tour, we walked along the elevated perimeter of the castle, circling the city.

All in all, Ghent is a great day trip & interesting place to visit.  Quaint, charming…very similar to Bruges.  If you have to choose, go with Bruges…but if you already know/find out that Bruges is your jam, then definitely add this to your list of Belgium sites to see.  Would I go back to Ghent?  Absolutely.  I would return with travel companions interested in seeing this city for sure.  Who doesn’t love canals intersecting through the city center?  And don’t forget about all the delicious beers, it is Belgium after all.

Post image for things we found {ghent, belgium}

As I mentioned yesterday, I spent last Saturday checking out Ghent, Belgium.  Located in Flanders, and often referred to as “Gent”, the spoken language here is Flemish: for all intents and purposes / in my book, it’s Dutch.  {I can’t get away!  Kidding…)  But, if you’re interested in learning more about Flanders & Flemish and all that jazz, here is a good resource.  Or, if you want to read some crazytalk about “why the Belgium Federation should be dissolved and Flanders should become an independent state“, you can do that too.

Or you can just look at some more pictures, whatever.

Once we arrived, we had to find some wifi to look up a couple things since we accidentally left our map in the car.  It was way too much effort to go all the way back down to the car, parked underground.  And the sun, the sun!  It was simply shining too.brightly to drag us back into the parking garage.

So naturally, we easily adapted, being all flexible and nonchalant…and walked directly to the nearest chocolate shop to plan our afternoon.

Really, it’s a good thing we’re so easy going.  I mean, not everyone would have dealt with going to a Belgium chocolate shop as well as us – ordering drinks, sampling things, you know…really making the best of it.  In fact, I bet most people would have insisted on returning to their car for the forgotten map.

Once we jotted down a couple things, we were off.  We spent the day wandering this way & that, down side streets and main streets and sunny streets…and obviously finding millions of things to take pictures of everywhere & in-between:

…graffiti knitting…

…maybe Grammy should consider this if she’s on the market for a new hobby?? {NYT explains the concept here}…

…we found the famous {lies!} noses of Ghent.  and then lost two euros tasting them…

…and a beer winkel.  One of the few Dutch words that amuses me…

…Dille & Kamille, or a Crate & Barrel-esque homegoods shop…

…a new age mailbox…

…an eight legged bicycle…{see what I did there?  really got you thinking. Ok, I probably should have called it a spider bike.}

…where all the locals hang out…

…and of course we found the perfect spot for a beer along the river…

..and then the second-perfect spot for another beer…

Hey what do you think of that little green guy in the picture above?  I bought him from the Dille & Kamille and carried him around with me for the rest of the afternoon so he wouldn’t get squished.  And I’m so glad I did because he is my new favorite accessory, I got more than a compliment or two.  In fact, it really tied the table together at this place, too bad they didn’t hire me to design their outdoor patio space.

Post image for a lovely little saturday {ghent, belgium}

Last Friday PAB headed home to the states for some quality time with his fam, as he hasn’t been back in Boston since moving here last August.  Rox & I are holding down the fort in the Eurozone, and we have definitely been making the best of the gorgeous weather that has enveloped the Netherlands {and beyond}.

On Saturday morning Lily & I hopped in the car and drove down to Ghent, Belgium, which is located between Brussels & Bruges.

In my opinion, good weather + good conversation make for the best kind of days.

Post image for mid-week din

Hi guys!  Well, at least it’s Wednesday & we’re one day closer to the weekend, phew.

So can I tell you a secret?  I really, seriously, can’t believe, that I am already back in the workforce.  It feels as though I never stopped, even though I spent the last FOUR months being relatively lazy + traveling Europe + basically steering clear of obligation & responsibility, things that one commonly associates with having a job.

Anyway, two days in, I am pretty excited to see what unfolds in 2012; I think it’s going to be a good year.  I am still working in sales {I just can’t seem to get away} for a global telecom company here in the Netherlands.  But there is one huge difference between this new role & past positions with former employers.  Previously, I had been managing a daily cold-calling, monthly quota driven sales team of Account Executives.  Now, as an Account Manager, I represent the face of my organization to my customers.  Basically, I coordinate different teams & individuals within my office when support is required.  Of course, I have goals & targets & commissions to earn {it’s still sales}, but I am so thankful for this new internal network designed to support myself, to support my customers.  I actually feel like I am part of a team…which truly is the best way to feel, no?

Daily recap: Monday was a pretty normal first day of work, opening my laptop for the first time to 90 emails & meeting so many people that I remember no one by face or name & consequently reintroducing myself to a couple, etc.  Tuesday was a long day, as I went to Brussels with three other new hires for an orientation / meet the leadership team.  It would have been nice if we didn’t have to meet at  the office at 6:30am and drive six hours roundtrip, but at least I have a better understanding of the structure of our company, and hey, I’m not really complaining…just summarizing the dayzzzz.

And how could I forget!  I also got something else out of my quick day trip to Brussels.  This oh-so-complicated dinner pictured above!  Salad & 1/2 a peanut butter sandwich, be jealous it’s ok I won’t tell.  It’s all my lazy self could make after taking Rox for a jaunt around the neighborhood.  {I don’t even know how on earth I am creating such a long post for today, clearly I’m just rambling at this point.}

I’ve got a couple good ideas for Thursday post + Friday post…stay tuned.

who throws a hand??

October 26, 2011

This guy.So the name Antwerpen comes from a phrase roughly translated as “hand throw, the throwing of the hand”.  There apparently is some legend about the people of Antwerp getting mad about paying taxes, so this guy cut of his hand & then threw it at the government in frustration. Or something like that. {Sometimes [...]

frites, yes please

October 25, 2011

So apparently it is pretty popular to eat french fries covered in a delicious mayonnaise-y sauce with a cute tiny little fork in these parts of the world.  And I am definitely not complaining. There are small shops & stands & food carts that specialize in frites in many tourist-filled towns; the trick is knowing [...]
