February 2012

I take a lot of pictures.  A lot, as in
a bunch,
a bundle,
an abundance,
oodles,
a copious amount,
gobs, a load,
a ton,
a mountain of photos
…everywhere I go.

I just can’t help myself. When I am in a new place, I think I make others tired just from watching me point & shoot a zillion times.

For me, taking photos is more than just capturing moments to remember this particular day.  It’s really about not buying shitty souvenirs.

Guys, I used to seriously love me some trinkets. Everywhere I went, I would buy things.  I would try to find things that were “really functional”, like a sweatshirt or cute luggage tags or jewelery or writing paper. You know, things I would actually, umm, use.

But then I realized a consistency: I would waste money, making purchases at the wrong time.  Just because I found a  seemingly functional souvenier {It’s a Saturday in July: I totally need to buy this adorable scarf!  It will look so good when I am spring skiing with my colored fleece next year!} doesn’t mean I this very moment is the right time to buy it.  I don’t wake up the morning we are going out in Paris to see the Eiffel Tower & walk through le Jardin de Tuileries thinking how much I need a new pair of studs.  {“These earrings are so versitile.  I’ll be able to wear them with everything – they are work appropriate, but still “fun”, you know what I mean?”}

My point:  Photographs are the best souvenirs ever.
But lately I’ve realized, if they just pile up on my external hard drive, it’s kind of the same result as buying that shitty souvenir.

I am so indecisive & critical of my photography, I can never decide which pictures I want to frame.   I spend too much time thinking and not enough time doing.  And not just with pictures, but decisions in general.  I tend to ”save” things for later that I am really looking forward to, and sometimes that means I never get around to enjoying/doing/having/watching/creating…those things.

So here’s to more decision making: because I can always take the frame down & replace the picture.

Like these.  Last night PAB & I finally hung some frames in our bedroom.  End result?  Snaps from Paris // Barcelona // Madrid // Prague // Lisbon linger in the air…inspiring us to continue to travel & take advantage of our time here in Europe.  {And let’s not overlook the fact that we no longer have a pile of unopened frames in our living room either.}

Post image for what’s a monday morning without coffee? or any morning for that matter.

What a magical thing, coffee.

Who would have thought something so dark & dirty-water-like could be such a staple for billions around the globe?

I haven’t always been a coffee drinker.  In fact, I didn’t regularly start drinking the stuff until a couple years ago.  And now, well…it’s probably the best damn thing since sliced bread.  Coffee, cappuccino, latte, sometimes espresso, I’ll take it.

Just don’t overdo the sugar.  A teaspoon is more than sufficient.  Milk?  A little bit, but once in a while.

But that’s just me.

PAB, for example, loves him some sugar.

Dare I ask, my opinionated self, how do you take your coffee?

Post image for {link-up} the friday list, v8

Link-up today!  You can do it.  {“Who, me…a sporadic post?”} Yes – let’s go, it’s Friday.  Details below.

Today I am sharing my current favorite fonts.  I love the idea of putting these guys to good use in all sorts of fancy projects, but the truth of the matter is that I am too indecisive to be all that crafty.  I can never pick a strategy, it’s hard for me to create something with multiple “layers” – ie, combining different individual elements for an end result.  I could work on a concept for hours with nothing to show for it.  Sometimes I get lucky, example: this Friday List link-up logo.  Even though it seriously took me forever to make this simple badge, and all I did was pick three different fonts for “the” “friday” and “list”.

There are a ton of sites {here is one} where you can download free fonts & easily install them on your computer {especially if you have a Mac – drag into Fontbook}.  Once installed, you can use a free program like GIMP to create your own JPEGs {buttons, badges, images, etc} as well as use in Word, Pages, or any other program that accesses your font directory.  Think of all the possibilities.  My only word of caution: make sure you check the font license before you download.  {It will be very clear if it is for personal use only, or for personal & commercial use, etc.}

To compare & contrast my ten {11?} current favorite fonts, I chose one of my favorite quotations.

1. Can you tell I’m going through a cursive handwriting phase?
2. Like a font?  Hover over it & the font name will appear.
3. Do you have a favorite font?  Do tell!

Every Friday I post The Friday List, a random collection of 10 things in some type of list format.  If you wanna join the link-up, simply write & publish a Friday list of your own, embed the button below by copying the copy/pasting the code into your post so people know you’re participating, and finally come back here to link-up with LinkyTools below.  Then, everyone else can you see your entry, and you can see everyone else’s!  {Still have questions?  Check out last week’s or just email me!}

Post image for madrid, take three: things {food, obviously}

What’s the best part of traveling somewhere new?  This could be topic of debate, but sorry, it’s not.

It’s the food + drink.

On Saturday we wandered around the city, stopping in at the famous market which was overly touristy & a bit overpriced, but it set the stage for some great photos.  There was a wide array of foods, ranging from fruits & veggies to meats & fish to chocolates & candies to breads & cheeses, and everything in between.

As I waited for my “everything” smoothie to be made, I picked out a straw.  Ok, not really she just shoved one in my drink, but I would have picked blue.  Probably because there were the least amount of blue straws left, like it was the coveted color or something.  {I have to be like everyone else, obviously.}

When she asked me what kind of smoothie I wanted, I told her I wanted everything.  It’s not nice to pick favorites, you know.

There was also an assortment of deliciousness available at practically every vendor.

On Friday night after we grabbed the keys to the apartment we rented for the weekend, we wandered down the street & found the perfect spot for dinner.  Unfortunately we abruptly left the bar once I started to feel really bad {I had quite the cold}, but not before we had just one beer.  Look at this baby glass, it was just too cute to not order a beer!  I had to!

I’ll leave you with this last picture, a plate of jambon…literally melt in your mouth goodness.

Madrid, I will be back again someday, that’s for sure.

Even though I was feeling under the weather, it was good to get away from the grayness of Amsterdam for the weekend. In Madrid, the sun was shining & the skies were blue.  We didn’t have high expectations for the weekend, other than eating + drinking + soaking up our Spanish surroundings.  I decided not to bring [...]
